Is Furniture Countable or Uncountable?
Furniture refers to movable items used to make a room or building suitable for living or working in. It is an uncountable noun and should not be used in the plural form:
✅ We bought some new furniture for the office.
❌ We bought some new furnitures for the office.
✅ The store sells a wide range of furniture.
❌ The store sells a wide range of furnitures.
✅ I need to rearrange all the furniture in my bedroom.
❌ I need to rearrange all the furnitures in my bedroom.
Like other uncountable nouns, furniture takes a singular verb:
✅ The furniture in the living room is very modern.
❌ The furniture in the living room are very modern.
✅ The furniture was delivered yesterday.
❌ The furniture were delivered yesterday.
✅ All the furniture has been arranged perfectly in the room.
❌ All the furniture have been arranged perfectly in the room.
If you need to quantify furniture, you can say piece(s) of furniture or some furniture. Alternatively, you can use specific terms such as a chair or a table. Do not say a furniture:
✅ That bookshelf is a nice piece of furniture for the living room.
❌ That bookshelf is a nice furniture for the living room.
✅ Only two pieces of furniture were needed to fill the space.
❌ Only two furnitures were needed to fill the space.
✅ She sold some furniture before moving abroad.
❌ She sold a furniture before moving abroad.
